Why Do You Say It Is the Workers’ Party?

“You said the Party to be founded would represent the interests of the working people. Then, why are you saying that it is the Workers’ Party? It means the Workers’ Party is the Party of the workers, doesn’t it?"

This was one of the questions raised to President Kim Il Sung by delegates in a meeting on merger of the Communist Party and the New Democratic Party held in July Juche 35 (1946). Momentarily, a hush fell over the meeting hall and all delegates casted their eyes on the President.

He smiled and taught: when we are talking about working, we often take into account the workers in factories or mines only, but it is a false view. Of course, they are workers, but peasants are also working and office workers are doing mental work, too. As the Party we are going to found is an organization which includes the progressive elements of all workers, peasants and working intellectuals who engage in working equally, the name of the Party should be the Workers’ Party. Then all participants completely agreed to his opinion.
