A Letter of Protest to Independence Army

One day in November 1926, a surprising news was prevailed at Hwasong Uisuk School, the military and political school the nationalists established with an aim to train key officers of the Independence Army.

It was said that a company commander embezzled the fund raised to prepare for winter in the school and spent them all at the expense of his marriage.

President Kim Il Sung who studied at this school was so exasperated against this news.

The fact that a commanding officer who took up the mission to fight the enemy with arms desperately committed such embezzling act without hesitation was clear evidence that high-ranking officers of the Independence Army were degenerating.

On this occasion, the President opened a meeting of the members of the Down-with-Imperialism Union (DIU) and sent a letter of protest exposing and criticizing the Independence Army and fighters for independence to each company on behalf of the students.

As it triggered such great reaction, even O Tong Jin, the commanding general of the Independence Army, a figure who couldn’t be disregarded in the then independence movement, came to see the President and blamed himself.

Later, the President recollected that the letter of protest sent to the Independence Army was the first criticism to the nationalists growing corrupted and degenerated as the time went on since organization of DIU.
